We Have All Lost a Treasure

A few words about rabbi Dubrawsky whom I will miss so very much....

When my wife and I decided that we would have our wedding in South Africa rather than Vancouver, I cried because I knew that that meant Rabbi Dubrawsky would not be able to be there with us.

I cherished him and I loved him.

He made Torah sweet. Or as he might prefer for me to say it, he helped me understand the sweetness of Torah.

I left every one of his shiurim thinking that the Torah he taught was like poetry.

He made me want to learn more.

I remember being at the Louis Brier one Shabbat morning. His drash was so heartfelt, sweet and deep that we all -- even the older residents who were not steady on their feet -- stood to shake his hand. The mood in the mood in the room was barely restrained applause.

He embodied ahavat Yisrael.

He taught me humility by his example.

In a deep way he helped me to find my way again when I returned to Vancouver, a bit lost, after studying in Yerushalayim for two years.

He, Dena and their children welcomed me into their home every Shabbat.

When our first daughter was born he was the first person I called after my family.

He had such a profound influence on my personal and spiritual development that he was sometimes even present in my dreams.

He was one of my greatest teachers.

He was the most eidel (as in gentle, refined, regal) person I have known.

I will miss him very much.

We have all lost a treasure.

My heart goes out to Dena and family.
